Certificate II in Joinery/Shopfitting/Stairbuilding - Pre-apprenticeship course covers a wide range of work areas, particularly joinery of all types. This pre-apprenticeship training program will provide you with a high degree of skills, knowledge of timber and other joinery materials and an ability to read plans and working drawings of a range of projects.

Career Opportunities

The majority of qualified tradesperson in this field are self employed or work as a qualified joiner in a larger organisation. The Joinery/Shopfitting/Stairbuilding field covers a wide range of work and will be involved in the construction of kitchens, windows and other types of fitments. Tradespersons are required to be proficient in the use of hand and power operated tools.

Entry Requirements

All applicants will need to attend an interview and pre-selection testing. Industry and Institute representatives will comprise the selection panel. Students should demonstrate a genuine desire to work in the joinery industry.

Duration & Delivery

This is a 6 month full time course.

Assessment

Participants are assessed via completion of required tasks and a demonstration of skills, eg. Written and verbal assignments, practical work, classroom participation, projects and/or written tests.

Practical Placement

Work experience placement is a part of the course.

Qualification

The Certificate II in Joinery/Shopfitting/Stairbuilding (Pre-apprenticeship) is a nationally recognised qualification.

Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC)

RCC is an assessment process that involves re-assessment of a previously gained accredited qualification that may no longer be recognised by official bodies. If you have an earlier qualification and have current industry experience, the RCC process will involve assessment of your prior qualification against the current qualification and if successful will result in a full or partial upgrade to the current qualification. Contact the teaching department for further advice on RCC or request an information brochure from the Customer Service Centre.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL is an evidence gathering assessment process where an individual's skills and knowledge in a specific vocational area are assessed against a unit or units of a nationally accredited training package. RPL is specifically for applicants who have skills and knowledge in a vocational area that may enable them to gain part or all of a formal qualification thus recognizing their non-formal and informal prior learning. Contact the teaching department for further advice on RPL or request an information brochure from the Customer Service Centre.
