Industry endorsement
The National Centre for Dairy Education Australia (NCDEA) recently conducted a two day workshop to review the content of its dairy farming courses.
Key people from the dairy industry with a broad range of skills and experience gathered together with experienced educators to review the learning and development resources used by the NCDEA in all levels of their training.
The aim was to ensure the skills and knowledge being taught in NCDEA courses, matches those required by the dairy industry at all levels of employment and to ensure the most appropriate up to date resources are being used to support the delivery of these programs.
The NCDEA's role for the dairy industry is to establish a national learning and development framework for the dairy industry career path supported by first class resources and national standards.
To achieve this there are three areas in which the NCDEA works:
- Skills and knowledge required to manage a dairy farm or dairy processing plant
- Specialist technical skills required by the dairy farmer and/or the supply chain, i.e. milking machine testing
- Other skills, e.g. Company Director or group facilitation skills
For the skills required to operate and manage a dairy farm the aim is to have a training framework that begins with offering new entrants the skills and knowledge essential to work safely and effectively on a dairy farm, then progress through the core skills and knowledge required to operate the farm, onto those required to manage production components of the business, and ultimately to manage the whole business.
Over the two days the reviewers were asked to look at the resources for more than half of the programs currently offered by the NCDEA from different perspectives including industry, technical, vocational and educational.
The process was conducted in a way that met the requirements of the Australian Quality Training Framework, ensuring that individuals successfully completing the programs will be able to obtain national accreditation for the skills and knowledge they acquire.
