Young farmers attend Don Campbell tour

Sixteen young dairy farmers from Victoria and South Australia attended the Don Campbell Memorial Study Tour recently which took them to the northern dairy belt of Tasmania for five days.

The 16 participants, tour organiser Kylie Barrie from the Young Dairy Farmers Development Program and Jolyon Dutton, industry trainer from the National Centre for Dairy Education Australia visited a variety of farms from once a day milking to milking three herds in nine hours. They also looked at high input farms and low input farms and those solely reliant on irrigation to those with dry land and irrigation. The tour involved touring Ashgrove Cheese and the TR Dairy Centre in Elliot.

The main aim of the tour was to further the professional and personal development of the participants and included gaining a formal qualification for Manage Livestock Production (RTE5103A from the Diploma of Agriculture offered by the NCDEA.

The participants also gained technical knowledge and an understanding of Tasmanian farming systems, developed analytical skills to appreciate differences between farming systems and an understanding of research, extension and education in dairying.

Tour organiser Kylie Barrie said the participants learnt that various opportunities exist in dairy business and now understand the role of the RDPs in the dairy industry. "It also provided the opportunity for them to develop a network of young professional dairy farmers including a young farmer group from the Launceston area who hosted them for a dinner. They were able to improve on their written and oral skills, develop self confidence and find out what it is like being an ambassador for their dairy region," said Ms Barrie.

Tour organiser Kylie Barrie said the 16 participants all took something away with them from the tour to implement on their own farms. "It's great to give these opportunities to our young farmers and see them make the most of them. GippsDairy played a major part in supporting and sponsoring of the tour, along with our other sponsors the NCDEA, UDV DC5 and DairySA." Eligible Participants received a rebate of education costs from Farm Ready Funding.
