Webinars enhance training for students
The NDCEA has successfully introduced new web based seminars - Webinars - in course delivery to students in the Diploma of Food Science and Technology.
"Elluminate" webinars support and enhance student learning while reducing time-off-the-job and travel costs. Students have access to NCDEA staff and international dairy expert contributions to subjects that cost, time and distance would otherwise have prevented.
Recently this technology was used in the delivery of the Concentrated and Dried Dairy Products subject for Level three students. NCDEA staff at Werribee delivered topics such as Powder packaging and storage stability and Mass and Energy Balances.
International specialist Dr Chris Bloore delivered from New Zealand via webinar in topics of Fire and Explosions in powder production, as well as Stickiness in powder manufacture - both key issues affecting the safe and efficient production of modern dairy powders. Students who participated in the webinars were able to interact with presenters and also participate in on-line tutorial sessions.
Students gained immediate value from this expert input in a very practical way. Participating students from a powder processing plant were having problems with powder stickiness during production trials of a new product. Being able to question Dr Bloore regarding this problem, coupled with prior learning through the NCDEA, the problems were rectified and the trials a success.
The students said that what they learnt during the webinar reinforced their learning during studies in the Diploma of Food Science & Technology course. With encouragement from Dr Bloore during the webinar, they had the confidence to modify their product trials. In all they were very pleased because they felt that their learning had provided a real, successful outcome, as well as a much better understanding of a production issue that had caused them trouble in the past.
