“The NCDEA Advanced Diploma in Agriculture enables you to come into the dairy industry at a higher level and you have more options.”
Colin lived on a dairy farm until he was six, but through visits to friends he continued to enjoy dairy farm life. “As I have always enjoyed working on dairy farms I decided to undertake the NCDEA Advanced Diploma of Agriculture,” explains Colin.
After being accepted into the Diploma, Colin deferred his studies for 12 months to travel overseas, where he initially went to work as a farm hand in a dairy in Holland. Colin spent 11 months learning how to fully feed cows and operate a fully automated dairy, and along the way he enjoyed travelling Europe attending international dairy shows.
Although he loved snow boarding in Austria and running with the bulls in Spain, Colin realised that if he was to have a career in the dairy industry then he needed to get a formal qualification.
“I really want to get into management and this course allows you to do this”, Colin explains. “With the advanced Diploma there are so many options, there’s consultancy, working in a milk factory to a whole range of management positions within the agricultural industry”.
Colin thorough enjoys studying with the NCDEA. He describes the teachers as “very approachable and they have a lot of time for you due to the smaller class sizes than you would find at uni. The other great thing is that you’re not just stuck in class all day. You get to go on trips, such as to see how irrigation works or how milk products are made so that you can understand the importance of on farm practices in the quality and shelf life of those products.”
