Erin Hennessey

Working on a dairy farm and studying part time was the perfect combination for Erin Hennessey. Currently enrolled in the Certificate IV in Agriculture at Dookie College, Erin commenced her studies at the NCDEA with the Certificate III in Agriculture after several years experience as a dairy farm worker.

“I’d grown up on a farm and thought I knew most things about dairy farming,” explained Erin, “but the boss talked me into doing the course as an apprenticeship. I was a bit reluctant initially but I’m really glad I did now. It was good to make sure I was doing things correctly.”

“Dookie is also very convenient for me to attend training,” said Erin who lives and works near Cobram in Northern Victoria. “It’s got all the facilities you need as a student and the staff are really helpful. I also enjoyed meeting with other students and participating in classroom discussions. Being part time, it’s only 3-4 days a month at classes so it’s easy to fit in with work committments.”

Erin plans to become a manager with the company she works for, Oxdale Dairy Enterprises, and the training is necessary to gain the skills and knowledge she would need for this sort of position. “Managing people is a bit different than managing cows!” laughs Erin.

“I would prefer to be a people manager on a farm, showing other people how to do things. I want to do as much schooling as I can to get to that supervisory level.”
