Matthew Trotter
“The teachers at the NCDEA are really good, they don’t give you too much of a hard time . . . . they’re really laid back but very professional”
While Matthew didn’t come from a farm he did his Year 10 work experience on a local dairy property, where he secured on-going casual work to earn money while he was completing Secondary School. “Once I had the taste of the dairy industry that was it I was hooked”, explains Matthew.
Matthew was successful in his application to study the Advanced Diploma of Agriculture with the NCDEA. As there was accommodation available at the NCDEA he decided to live on campus rather than drive from Pakenham every day.
“One of the reasons I wanted to study with the NCDEA is the fact that the course is 50% theory and 50% placement. This means that you get to learn in the real world and you’re not stuck in a classroom the whole time.”
Matthew really enjoyed his nine week placement at a dairy farm in Warrnambool. “It was really good fun”, Matthew explains, “Feeding cows, calf rearing and cutting and raking were some of the great stuff that I got to do. I hadn’t spent much time on a tractor before, but on placement I learned how to top paddocks., and now have a summer job four days a week working on a tractor for a local dairy farmer.”
After completing the Advanced Diploma Matthew aspires to getting some cows together, do some share farming and eventually own and manage his own farm one day.
