Reece Attenborough
“The range of careers that the Advanced Diploma can lead to is amazing - doing the course has really broadened my knowledge rather than just gaining an understanding by working on a farm.”
Reece graduated from the Advanced Diploma of Agriculture in July 2006. His plans are to travel overseas in 2007 doing hay and grain harvesting in Canada and the US on a working tour while he sees the world. Upon his return he plans to expand his herd of stud and commercial cows and potentially take on management of the family dairy farm.
Reece explains that while he gained some farming skills growing up on a farm, the NCDEA course has provided him with the why and how behind pasture, animal, machinery and business issues in a dairy farm business and has broadened his general knowledge and understanding of the dairy industry.
“Through my studies I have realised that dairy farming is a business and it is important to make a farm productive and profitable. The last six months, with the focus on managing the production system and the business units has been fantastic. It tied everything from the previous two years together and the succession planning units will be invaluable in working through our own family farm succession issues,” explains Reece.
Reece says that for him, the key aspects of the Advanced Diploma were “business planning and analysis, succession planning and being able to pick and choose from the management styles of the farm businesses the students do work placement on. Not only do we learn from those we personally work on, discussion in class and amongst fellow students enables us to gather ideas from their farm placements and to hear points of view from a much wider resource base than any other course I am aware of.”
“I initially wanted to study ag science at university, because that is what my mates at school were talking about, but I didn’t get the score I needed. Now that I have completed the NCDEA course I realise that this is exactly what I needed to do and it’s the best course to equip people working in the dairy industry. . . . I realise now I really only wanted to go to Melbourne to party with my mates.”
Reece suggests that one of the best aspects of the NCDEA courses is the networks students develop. “I’ve had the opportunity to meet numerous farmers as well as the key players, such as the presidents of the Australian Dairy Farmers Ltd and the United Dairyfarmers of Victoria. These contacts will come in handy for my future in the dairy industry.”
